How To Structure a Preschool Day at Home
Are you planning to do preschool at home with your child? One of the most daunting aspects of homeschooling can be finding a schedule that works for you and your child. You probably already have predictable routines for breakfast time, nap time, dinner time, and bedtime. Creating one for your new preschool time is totally doable, and will help you and your child as you begin your preschool journey!
And don’t worry, we are here to help! Scroll to the bottom of this post for a free sample schedule of how you might structure a preschool day at home, and be sure to check out our online preschool program and awesome preschool workbooks to make your preschool planning even easier!
Why do you need a routine?
Creating a reliable routine is so important because it will help both you and your child know how the day will go, and provides everyone a sense of consistency, stability, and organization. Just like any new routine, it is important to ease into things if you need to. May be your preschool day starts with just 10 minutes together reading a story, and you gradually add more and more time and activities as you both get more comfortable. Whatever you choose, it is helpful to start your preschool day the same way every time so everyone knows that school time is starting. Here are some ideas on how to start your preschool day:
Read a story together
Sing a hello song
Find a fun dance or wiggle song
Do a calendar time and review the day’s schedule
Start with a fine motor activity, something super hands on and fun
What should the schedule include?
What should a homeschool preschool schedule include? When you’re doing preschool at home, you can really cater your lessons to your child and their interests. Some things you might consider including would be:
Literacy (reading together, learning letters, phonemic awareness, pre-writing and writing, speaking and listening activities)
Math (shapes, colors, number recognition, counting, patterns, sorting)
Art (process art activities, crafts, fine motor skills)
Science and STEM (building with blocks, simple cause and effect science activities)
Cooking (this incorporates so much math and science for your preschooler!)
Dramatic and pretend play (dress up, puppets, acting out stories)
Snack time (you can work in cooking and math and social skills here!)
Circle and calendar time (so many great math and literacy skills)
Free play time (children learn by playing! This is super important!)
Sensory play (again, you can work this into your literacy or math lessons so easily!)
