Large Motor Activities to do with Masking Tape

Large motor skills, also known as gross motor skills, are crucial for preschoolers as they involve the use of the body's large muscles for activities like walking, running, jumping, and climbing. These skills contribute to better coordination, balance, and strength, which are important for more complex physical activities as they grow. Large motor skills also improve children's cognitive development by enhancing their ability to focus, follow directions, and solve problems. Today we have a some super fun large motor ideas you can do with your preschooler and you only need a few things you can find around your house!

Game 1: Follow the Lines

Place your masking tape down on the floor in different patterns. We did a straight line and a zig zag line, but you could also do curves or swirls or shapes or anything you’d like! Invite your child to walk, jump, crawl, or move like an animal while following the lines. This helps them build those large motor skills!

Game 2: Drive the Cars

Invite your child to drive their favorite vehicles on the masking tape lines. This encourages your child to crawl or scoot, which also helps build large motor muscles.

Game 3: Roll the Ball

Give your child a ball and show them how to roll it down the masking tape lines. This is a great activity for large motor skills, concentration, and hand-eye coordination!

We learn about straight lines, curved lines, and slanted lines when we introduce letter features. Watch our videos below to see how we teach these to our preschoolers! And be sure to check out our YouTube channel here for even more free videos! You can also grab our free worksheets below to practice tracing lines!
