As parents and teachers, we are always on the lookout for simple, fun, and educational activities to keep preschoolers engaged. One fantastic option that blends creativity, sensory play, and skill-building is tracing using a salt tray. Though it may seem basic, salt tracing has incredible benefits for young learners. We love using salt trays for so many different reasons! Here are a few of them:
Fine Motor Skill Practice
Salt trays are great for fine motor skill practice! As they trace lines and patterns, children are strengthening the small muscles in their hands and fingers, which will later support writing with a pencil or crayon.
Pre-Writing Skills
Before children learn how to write with a pencil, they need to develop control over their hand movements. Salt tracing offers a playful introduction to writing by allowing preschoolers to form letters, numbers, and shapes in a forgiving medium.
Sensory Input
Preschoolers are naturally drawn to sensory play, which helps them make sense of the world through touch, sight, and sound. Salt tracing is a wonderful sensory activity because it provides a tactile experience as children feel the texture of the salt under their fingers.
Supports Focus
Activities that hold a child’s attention for extended periods are valuable in building concentration and focus. Because salt tracing is both calming and engaging, it often captivates children longer than traditional writing exercises or worksheets.
Affordability and Ease
Let’s not forget one of the most practical reasons salt tracing is such a great activity: it’s incredibly easy and affordable to set up. All you need is a tray, some salt, and a little creativity!

Place one letter card in the salt tray. Model for your child how to write the letter in the salt. Remember to always start from top to bottom, left to right, and counterclockwise when you are forming letters.
