10 Self-Care Ideas to do with Kids
What is self-care? Self-care is defined as "the practice of taking an active role in protecting one's own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress." So in other words, it's intentionally doing what makes you feel like you.
Needless to say, self-care is super important for each of us--especially with all of the extra stresses this turbulent year has presented. To show up as our best selves, we need proper care. But let's be honest. If you're like me, finding time to actually do self-care can be very... well, challenging. Particularly with littles running around. So how can we fit it in when it seems like there are no possible breaks during the day? Week? Or even year?
First of all, self-care doesn't need to be fancy. Really! It is not an indulgence and it doesn't have to be luxurious to be effective! It can be as simple as saying "no" to a social event or washing your hands with your favorite smelling soap. Does that sound possible to do with children around? It totally is!
If those ideas surprise you and you're unsure of how to create moments of self-care within parenthood, here are 10 more ideas to get you brainstorming!
Wear a mud mask or your favorite facial product while playing with your kids.
Pack the kids in the car and run to your favorite drive-through place and get a treat. Remember, those kiddos are legally strapped in their seats and that can be a perfect opportunity for you to get a break while enjoying something tasty.
Have a dance party with the kids in the living room. Turn on songs that are upbeat and make you happy!
Go for a walk, hike, or jog with the kids if you're feeling cooped up.
If you love crafting or art, do a project with the kids.
Have a nail or makeover party with your daughter(s).
Pop some popcorn and turn on a family friendly movie you all can enjoy.
Too overwhelmed to make that cake you said you'd bake for your mom's birthday? It's okay to say no.
Need to grocery shop? Add a special treat to your list that you normally wouldn't!
Have cleaning to do? Turn on your favorite audiobook as you're tidying up.
Remember, the key is to prepare self-care activities with intention. That means you're making decisions or plans purposefully and with self-rejuvenation in mind. Self-care can be planned far in advance, just ahead of time, or in the moment.
Maybe there's nothing on this list that interests you. Maybe you like some of the ideas, but feel unsure where to start. I promise that as you reflect on what helps you feel the most physically/mentally/spiritually healthy, make the time for it, and follow through --despite and within all life's chaos--you will begin to make monumental shifts throughout the day and continuously improve on the essential practice of self-care.
