Fruit Sorting (free download!)

Have you ever studied fruits with your preschooler(s) before? If you haven’t as a part of your learning, we highly recommend it! Fruits are a fun and easy theme to study in the summertime, especially when so many of them are ripe and in season! One of our favorite activities within our fruit unit is fruit sorting. This is great for preschoolers in so many ways! It helps them learn the different fruits and their names (as they may not be familiar with them all) and it also helps them learn their colors as they practice sorting and categorizing. If you want to work on fine motor with them, throw some tweezers in the mix and you can cross off another foundational skill to work on!

Materials Needed:

Directions:

  • Download the FREE fruit & color sorting pages below.

  • Cut them out and use some tape to tape them onto your sorting containers.

  • Set the containers out in a row so that your child can clearly see each one.

  • Dump your fruit bucket out on the floor or table and talk to your child about the different colors that they see. You can sort the colors first if you wish.

  • Next, talk about each fruit, it’s name, and if your preschooler has ever ate it before.

  • Questions you might ask: Have you ate this fruit before? Do you like it? If not, would you like to try it? What color is this fruit?

  • Allow your child to sort the fruit into its corresponding jar. Give them tweezers to practice fine-motor as an added bonus!

We’ve included a basic color sorting page as part of this download, as well. We love to study the colors and then introduce the fruits after. You can sort the fruits using both of the pages in this download. Here is a quick video to see this activity in action:

And there you have it! We hope you enjoy this activity as much as we do!
